BASE (Bold Ambitious Skilled Engineers). Base Renewables was founded in January 2021 by three partners who wanted to make a difference in the South African Renewable Market. Having the Vision between them and a skill set that is sought after in South Africa they have created a company that has already hit the ground running.
This team has helped international companies’ setup the foundation to their O&M business and felt that it was time that a Fully owned South African company highlight their Skills in the renewable arena. Between the three directors they have more than 50 years’ experience in the Utility, Battery & Renewable sector.

Base Renewables ensures optimum performance for new and existing Renewables plants having the experience and expertise which focusses on Preventative & Condition based maintenance, control plant monitoring, planning and execution to ensure reduced operating costs for our clients.
MEET THE TEAM

ANTHONY CORIN
Managing Director
In 1998 Anthony founded Franco Afrique Technology (FAT) which has interests in agriculture , renewable energy, both for grid scale and distributed systems, speciality agrochemicals and energy storage. FAT is a dynamic and lean enterprise continuously pushing boundaries. Anthony has been involved in the grid scale PV industry in south Africa since its inception. From conceptualizing the SLIMSUN facility in 2009. SLIMSUN formed part of the REIPPP round 1 projects. His experience in overseeing all aspects of this project as Owners Engineer is testament to the fact the SLIMSUN has the most impressive operational record for grid scale PV plants anywhere in the world.
He has further been involved at Board level in developing multi plant Operational and Maintenance strategies and procedures which has now been integrated into BASE Renewable mission for leading edge O&M services. Anthony Corin has continued to push boundaries throughout his career. At 34 he became the youngest
executive committee member of the Sentrachem Group, at the time South Africa’s second largest diversified chemical company. He has always had an inner desire to change the world and taken this to task through many of the companies he has founded or been part of. He has extensive experience working in multiple countries and uses this Knowledge Base to further develop energy solutions across Africa.

RICARDO SAMPSON
Director General Manager
In 2010 he was employed with Eskom Transmission Western Grid as a Protection Technician where he did Commissioning of High voltage equipment and Protection schemes. In 2011 he acted as Secondary Plant Supervisor where he had 9 Technicians reporting to him. In 2012 he was promoted to Senior Protection technician where he Led Commissioning Projects and performed Power system investigations. In 2016 he was appointed as Senior Advisor Secondary Plant where he provided technical support to Technicians and Advised Management on technical solutions and strategized on maintenance and operations in the Power Grid. In 2017 He started with Juwi as the Senior O&M Engineer for the EMEA region and was Appointed as the GMR2.1 for their Portfolio of South African Plants. Ricardo Sampson has really pushed boundaries by winning the best B. Tech paper presented in Electrical Faculties at CPUT, first place in Western Cape SAIEE Regional and further on winning first place for SAIEE National Student Competition 2013. Ricardo was one of the two engineers in South Africa chosen to attend training provided by Hitachi & Department of Science and Technology, in Japan on Smart Grids, Renewable energy and Substation Equipment in the Transmission and Distribution environment. He also wrote and obtained his GCC (Government Certificate of Competency) in June 2014. In the month of June, Ricardo was asked to present his paper on Utilising Phasor Measurement units to detect Power Swing and Out of step at the PAC World International Conference 2015 in Scotland.

KEVIN THAMANA
Director Chief Technology Officer
In 2011 Kevin was employed at Woodbeam as a Sales Engineer where he provided Protection and Scada solutions to the mining industry, in 2013 he started with Conco as a System Control Engineer where he honed his skills in the Renewable industry as he was fortunate to be part of the team that Commissioned SCADA systems on several Round 1 Wind & Solar Farms. He has Extensive experience on implementing industrial networking solutions & Telecontrol Protocols which include “IEC 61850, MODBUS TCP/IP, DNP3, IEC 60870-10/101/103/104, ICCP, MODBUS RTU & Profibus” He has extensive experience on configuring and Engineering substation RTUs and Gateways from variety of vendors including “ SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, Actom, Copper Power System, Subnet Solutions” He has extensive experience in configuring and engineering Human Machine Interface (HMI) from variety of vendors including “SEL, GE, ABB, CITECT, Survalent Technology”. Part of his experience with Conco included working on multi-vendor systems in Substations where he acquired his relevant skills with the South African Grid code. In 2018 he joined Juwi as the Senior SCADA specialist where he provided input into conceptual designs, drafted technical specifications, and performed technical evaluations on new plants according to Juwi’s requirements.
